Influential figure in Denver history. Martin Currigan, Sr., M.D., was born in 1845 in Ireland. He is the oldest member of his family to be buried in Currigan Circle. After arriving in America in 1864, Currigan came west to Colorado after a short stay in New York, and eventually . became the plastering contractor for the Brown Palace Hotel. He entered politics in the early 1890s and was elected and reelected to the City Council and often demonstrated generosity to the city's needy. During the autumn election of 1900, he rode from one election place to another checking on returns. As he drove his horse and two-wheeled cart in North Denver, the cart tipped against the curb and he was thrown. He survived the accident, but developed blood poisoning and died in December 1900. His funeral was the largest held in Denver history. Denver's Currigan Hall is named in his honor.
