Philosopher, Historian. The son of William Gershom Collingwood, he was awarded a fellowship at Oxford in 1912, and apart from military service in Admiralty Intelligence from 1914 to 1918, he spent the remainder of his professional life at Oxford, being appointed Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy in 1935. Much of his early work was in theology and the philosophy of religion. In 1916 he published his first book, "Religion and Philosophy". He was also a professional archaeologist and carried out his work at the Galava Roman Fort in Ambleside. Although he sometimes described his archaeology as a hobby, he became an authority on the history and archaeology of Roman Britain, producing books still in use to this day, in particular his work on Roman inscriptions. He is most famous for "The Idea of History", a work collated soon after his death from various sources by his pupil, T. M. Knox.
