The settlement was visited in 1888 by American reformer Jane Addams, who returned to the USA inspired to create similar facilities there. Addams opened the first Hull House in Chicago a year later. In 1893 he moved to Bristol as a Canon Residentiary, and in 1906 he became a Canon of Westminster. One of his most famous works is "Practicable Socialism," written in conjunction with his wife, Henrietta Octavia Weston, social reformer and a co-worker of Octavia Hill and also a philanthropist like her husband.
