Lena Jackson, affectionately known as "Baba", and "Sister Lena" by her many relatives and friends was the epitome of a strong will, endurance and faith. She was born in Barnesville, Georgia on February 1, 1892 at a time when the bitter legacy of slavery and Reconstruction still poisoned the lives of African Americans. Lena married at an early age to John Henry Singleton and to this union two daughters Katherine and Lena were born, all of whom preceded her in death. The family later moved to Americus, Georgia, where John Henry owned a shop where he tailor-made shoes. The family later moved to Atlanta, Georgia where Lena Jackson and her children resided for the rest of their lives. She later married Lewis Jackson who preceded her in death. Lena Jackson was a faithful member of Atlanta's Butler Street C.M.E. Church and also was an ingenuous card player who loved to play Bid Wiess. She possessed a wonderful memory up until she had a light stroke at age 94. The Lord blessed are beloved one with a long beautiful life, but God saw fit on February 17, 1996 at age 104 to call his child home.
