On April 6, 1865, Samuel enlisted in the Union Army for a period of one year. He was mustered in as a private in the 201st Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry, Company H, at Pottsville, Schulykill County, Pennsylvania. At time of muster-in, he was promised a U.S. bounty of $100 and a local bounty of $200. On April 10, he was paid $33.33 as the first installment of his U.S. bounty. He appears on the Company returns on May 1, 1865, in Alexandria, Virginia. He was mustered out of service at Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, on June 21, 1865.
Samuel was the sixth of eight children and the youngest son born to Hannah Doll and Jacob Ruchstein/Rustay. On January 10, 1825, he was baptized at the Wapwallopen Union Reformed and Lutheran Church at Wapwallopen, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and his Sponsors were John and Peggy Bergy. He married Louisa Bachman, and the couple had at least six children: Ann, Louisa, Mary, William, Alice, and Harry. After Louisa's death, he married Sarah. He worked for the railroad in 1900.
