Benjamin was mustered into service in the Union Army on March 17, 1864 as a private in Company I, 143rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry. He was wounded in action on the fourth day of the Battle of Petersburg, Virginia. He was mustered out of service on May 26, 1865.

He married Catherine Rustay, and the couple had ten children: Samuel Isaiah, Elizabeth, William Henry, John Benjamin, Tobias, Mary Ellen, Daniel, Michael George, Amanda, and Rosa.

He worked as a farmer.
