Served as a private in the Pennsylvania Infantry, 47th Regiment, Company H. He enlisted on August 8, 1864 at West Chester, Pennsylvania under the assumed name of James Hall because his father was opposed to him joining the army - he was only 16. He was honorably discharged on June 1, 1865 at Washington, DC.

Isaiah was the oldest of five children. He married Matilda Bush on March 15, 1873, at Paradise Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania. The ceremony was performed by Jacob Hilgert, Justice of the Peace. The couple had seven children: Franklin, Sarah, Harry, William, Nora, Russell, and another unknown child. In 1880 he was a shoe shop worker.
