Julia was one of fourteen children born to Michael and Julia (Sr.) Barry of Farranfore, County Kerry, Ireland. Her father was a stonemason. Eventually most of the Barry siblings immigrated to America, and Julia herself had been living and working there for a long time when she came back to Ireland to take care of her sick mother in early 1912. After her mother's death, she returned to America on the Titanic, on which she perished at age twenty-six. She had been on her way to stay with her sister Nellie and some of her other siblings in Yonkers.
