Derek K. Ballmann, 10, Union, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at St. John's Mercy Hospital, Washington.
Derek collapsed on the playground at St. Gertrude School due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, related to an enlarged heart.
He was born March 24, 1992, at Washington, the son of Keith Ballmann and wife Brenda, nee Frankenberg.
Derek was a student at St. Gertrude Grade School, Krakow, where he served on the Student Council.
He was a member of the fifth- and sixth-grade volleyball team and played baseball in the Washington Babe Ruth
League.
He also was a member of the youth bowling league at Town 'N Country Lanes.
Derek belonged to Cub Scout Pack 462 and enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Darlene Ballmann, and his grandfather, Robert Frankenberg.
Derek is survived by his parents, Keith Ballmann and wife Brenda, nee Frankenberg, Union;one sister,Monica Ballmann, of the home; his grandparents, Shirley Frankenberg and Charles and Shearon Ballmann, all of Washington;his great-grandparents, Marion Hoelscher and Lucille Frankenberg, both of Washington; his godparents, Vaughn and Lori Vollmer, Union; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 8, at St. Gertrude Church, Krakow, with Father Dennis Zacheis, Father Jack
Costello, Father Kevin Schmittgens and Father Tim Toohey officiating.
Interment was in the church cemetery.

Operation D.E.R.E.K. (Defibrillators Everywhere ' R ' Essential Kits) has been established in his name, to supply automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) to all schools within the Washington and Union school districts. The portable defibrillators are used to revive victims of cardiac arrest by "resetting" the heart's natural rhythm with jolts of electricity.
