James was born about 1530, at Cranbrook, Kent, England. He was the son of Richard Bigge and his wife, Joan. Like many others of his family, he was in the cloth trade, which was flourishing at that time in the Cranbrook area. About 1555, he married a woman named Ann. Her family name is unknown. They settled in Capel, about ten miles from Cranbrook. James died fairly young, leaving a pregnant young widow and three small children. He wrote his will on May 31, 1562 and it was proved on May 27, 1563. He doesn't mention being sick, but he must have expected to die soon, making his will at such an early age. James was obviously very prosperous. He made his brother Gervase of Cranbrook his executor. Being a resident of Capel at the time of his death, James was surely buried in the churchyard of St. Thomas a Becket Church in Capel.
