James was the son of John Tuchet, 4th Baron Audley and his wife Elizabeth. He was the commander of the Lancastrian forces at the Battle of Blore Heath defending the throne of King Henry VII. He was defeated by Sir Roger Kynaston of Stocks near Ellesmere and beheaded after the battle. A cross was erected on the spot where he was reported to have been killed.
