NORRIDGEWOCK -- Afton M. Hayden, 81, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2006, at Cedar Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Skowhegan. She was born on Dec. 21, 1924, in St. Albans, the daughter of Carl and Ella (Robinson) Baird. She was educated in Norridgewock, Oakland and Madison schools. Afton started working at Norrwock Shoe Co. in Norridgewock for five years and once she started her family she began babysitting in Madison for family and friends for many years. She then worked for Maplecrest Nursing home in Madison for eight years and then did home healthcare until retiring in the late 1980s. She was a past member of the Sterling Rebekah Lodge No. 95 in Madison, where she was a member for 50 years. She was also a member of the First Congregational Church in Norridgewock. She enjoyed doing latch hook rugs, embroidering, sewing, crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She is survived by two daughters, Roxie Wallace and her husband, Richard, of Norridgewock and Ellouise Clark and her husband, Jammie, of Anson; son Leonard Hayden and his wife, Amanda, of Newport; two sisters, Edith Blake of Norridgewock and Freda Dunlap of Skowhegan; three brothers, Clyde Baird and his wife, Lorene, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Maynard Baird and his wife, Ruth, of Billings, Mont., and Linwood Baird and his wife Sara of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two sisters-in-law, Retha Baird of Marysville, Wash., and Beverly Baird of Ocala, Fla.; 12 grandchildren Louann, Laurie, Dale, Randy, Stewart, Shawn, Steven, Taylor, Brandon, Carl, Rosh and Andrew; eight great-grandchildren, Samantha, Jacob, Melanie, Bradley, Benjamin, Zachary, Silas, and Emily; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Harley and Chester Baird; and a grandson Ryan Wallace. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 13, at Smart and Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14, at the Norridgewock Congregational Church in Norridgewock.
