SKOWHEGAN -- Bernard E. Hayden, 80, of Skowhegan passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at Cedar Ridge Nursing Care Center. He was born in Athens on March 5, 1924, the son of Francis M. and Nettie (Lincoln) Hayden. He was educated in the Athens school system. He was first married to the former Afton Baird and then he married Mildred Arsenault, who passed away Jan. 18, 1978. He served in the Army during World War II, stationed in Panama. After serving in the military he started working for H&W Scott Paper Co. in Madison for five years. He worked at American Cyanamid in Sanford and then Waterboro Leather in Waterboro. Then he went to work for Madison Paper in 1972, retiring in the early 1990s. He was a member of the American Legion Tardiff Belanger Post No. 39 in Madison. He enjoyed helping out with Bingo held at the American Legion in Madison. He enjoyed family reunions, going camping and dancing. Survivors include one son, Leonard Hayden and wife, Amanda, of Newport; four daughters, Roxie Wallace and husband, Richard, of Norridgewock, Ellouise Clark of North Anson, Donna Keaten and husband, Derek, of Skowhegan and Debra Foss and husband, Gary, of Madison; one stepson, Raymond McEwen of Portland; two stepdaughters, Gloria Burnell of Saco and Diane Diolio and husband, Frank, of Saco; five brothers, Herbert Hayden and wife, Greta, of Athens, Durwood Hayden and wife, Marjorie, of Hartland, Alfred Hayden and wife, Lura, of East Madison, Douglas Hayden of Solon and Wayne Hayden and wife, Greta, of North Carolina; two sisters, Chloe Collins and husband, Garold, of Cornville and Corrine Richardson and husband, Norman, of Clinton; 33 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; special friend Eileen Goodine of Skowhegan. He was predeceased by two stepsons, Harold and Robert McEwen; three brothers, Wilder, Millard and Carl Hayden; one sister, Doris Hayden. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 21, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at Mount Rest Cemetery, Athens, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Donations may be made in Bernard's memory to the American Legion Tardiff Belanger Post No. 39 in Madison.
