He was mustered in as a Private and Musician in Company G, 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on May 29, 1861. He served until his died at his regiment's camp at Brandy Station, Virginia on March 22, 1864.
He is listed in New Jersey Adjutant General records as "John Burkemyer".
The Culpeper, VA National Cemetery Burial Register from 1912 indicates on page 58 that he was a Drummer in Company G of the 3rd New Jersey Infantry.
It also gives his date of death as 22 Mar 1864 and lists his initial burial place as Brandy Station, VA.
In the US Register of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865 there is a John Birkenmeger, a Private in Company G of the 3rd New Jersey Volunteers who died in a "Regl. Hosp" on 25 Mar 1864 of Intoxication. Is this him?
