Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company C, 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on May 25, 1861. When Captain Joseph F. Rowland resigned on January 20, 1862, Lieutentant Buckley was promoted Captain to take his place in the chain of command (January 30, 1862). He led his men though the unit's first combat actions, and was mortally wounded at the June 27, 1862 Battle of Gaines Mill during the June-July 1862 Seven Days Battles. He lingered until July 4, dying of his wounds that day.
