Michelle (Talkington) Wallet, 37, of La Conchita succumbed to the horrific mudslide on Jan. 10, 2005, along with her three youngest girls.

Religious people can only believe her soul was called back to her creator to act as a role model for the less perfect angels. Atheists and agnostics can easily believe her ethereal spirit will be traveling the universe emitting messages of love to be received by those closest during her time of life.

The W & H questions, who, what, where, when and how are easily answered, but the elusive why? What makes us individually comfortable, if not satisfied, by the most profound reasoning our minds can configure. Michelle, the eldest grandchild of Mary 'Mae,' the eldest child of the Mary and Michael Kelly family, Irish immigrants of Jamaica Plain, Mass.; and Max 'Van' the eldest child of the Hortense and Solly Van Der Wyk family, German immigrant and first-generation American of German and French linage of Pasadena. Her mother, Karen (Van Der Wyk) Townsend was married to Michael Talkington (deceased). Her paternal grandmother, Hazel Talkington, is still very much alive, as is Max Van Der Wyk, her maternal grandfather. Her living father of 27 years is Scott Townsend. Her grandfather Scott Senior is in his 90s. Her mother, father and Scott Senior live in Camarillo Springs. She is also survived by a devoted brother, Lance Talkington of Ventura; aunt, Susan (Talkington) Reagen of Ventura; aunt, Linda Van Der Wyk, who has been like a second mother to the children who adored her, and uncle Richard 'Bunny' Van Der Wyk of Ventura; very close cousin Kelly and her husband Scott Dunst of Ventura; cousin Laura and her husband Gregg Ramirez and their children, Jake, Kyle and Lindsey, all of Ventura; grandmother, Patti Townsend of Ventura; and uncle Mark and his wife Melissa of Ojai; and cousins Kris, Kraig Kevin and his wife Katie, and little Abagail Van Der Wyk, all of Ojai.

The list of Michelle's surviving family members is extensive and order of listing has no bearing on closeness of relationship. The family members are Frank and Carol Colla and Franchesca and Kevin Crisp, Diane Brothers, Luanne Van Der Wyk, Eric and Amy Christeson Jules and Raina, all of the San Francisco area, Julia Van Der Wyk of Santa Cruz, Eric and Aaron Van Der Wyk, Nicholas Colla, both of San Diego, Karl and Jason, both of Las Vegas, Lisa and John Ogren and their children, of Alta Loma, Lori and Brian Sprague of Buena Park, the Kelly, Brothers and Crist families in Massachusetts, Clinton and Danielle Carpenter, both of Great Falls, Mont., and Leon, Cindy and Lewis Van Der Wyk, all of Huntington Beach. Michelle leaves unbelievably distraught daughter, Jasmine (16), and husband of 17 years, Jimmy Wallet. The children were each exceptional in their own way. Paloma (2) had already discovered humor in most any situation. Raven and Hannah, who were being home schooled like their older sister, were on top of everything happening.

The whole family enjoyed music and the girls were learning to play piano, although Raven had shown an interest in learning to play the violin. Even though they did not attend public school, their house was often full of neighbors' or friends' children. Michelle was artistically talented, as is Jimmie. The children's art work was always beyond their age, quality wise. I always saved revised sheets of plan drawings for them to use the back sides. Raven was so busy and talkative almost hyper. Hannah was more of a thinker and a little shy when younger. 'Grammy' Karen and aunt Linda took her shopping for her birthday in November, which was a real treat for all three.

Jimmie's family also feels the grief inspired by this tragedy. His deceased grandparents are George and Edna Wallet and deceased father is Jim Wallet. Jimmie's surviving relatives are his aunts and uncles, Ann and John Studer, George and Marcy Wallet, David and Wanda Wallet, John Wallet, and Stan and Peggy Wallet; cousins, Brenda and Bruce Holubeck, Joan and Bob Starkel, Theresa St. Germain, Brian and Lisa Wallet, Steven and Denise Wallet, Paul Wallet, Tisha and John Hemme, John and Rebecca Wallet, Rhonda Dinius, Melissa Rogers, Celeste and Mike Gray, Amanda Wallet, and Curtis Wallet; the cousins' children, (Brenda's children) Breyden and Brooke, (Jean's children) Megan and Tina, (Theresa St. Germain's children) Tyler and Alexis, (Brian's children) Bryson and Brooklyn, (Steven's child) Ethan, (John's children) Brandon, Shawn, Travis, (Rhonda's child) Jaida, (Melissa's child) Olivia, (Celeste's children) Dylan and Toby, (Paul's child) Jimmy, (Tisha's children) A'Lisa, Shealey, Ricky and Tylor; and Wallet uncles and cousins, Virginia and Steve Hovley, Fred and Louise Wallet, Anita Foster Wallet.

Relatives of Hannah, Raven and Paloma are great-grandparents, Frank and Aurora Espinosa; grandparents, Linda (husband Dave) Silva; aunts and uncles, Kami and Tony Villa, Lorie and Robert Valdivia; and cousins, Alyssa, Devin Valdivia, Stephanie, Sarah, Christian and Roman Villa. Jimmie's aunts and uncles are Frances and Albert Palapox, Mary Helen and Wayne Burgess; and his cousins' children, (Lisa's children) Alegra, Mark and Lillie, (Shauna's children) Kayla, Cole and Torres, and (Shy's children) Liam and Burgess.

This world is not lacking for people with special talent. There are even numerous souls with several specialized talents, some people have pleasing personalities, and kindly and giving natures. There are those who possess an abundance of compassion and understanding, others are very sensitive and forgiving. Once in a while, the world is fortunate to be able to welcome a special person, whose make-up is a combination of all of these positive worthy traits. Michelle's first and most important talent was being an unusual mother! Her successful home schooling of the three older daughters included education, good manners, sharing, respectfulness and all of the important subjects for good citizenship.

Michelle had an uncanny ability to learn to perfection artwork, from calligraphy to design. She was an accomplished seamstress with all the associated phases. Everything she did was of professional caliber, including organic gardening, cooking and baking. She was on call all around the county for her special occasion and wedding cakes, always intricate works of art, donned with her signature fresh flowers and incomparable taste.

When in high school, she was called upon continually by then Congressman Robert Lagomarsino to design and do the calligraphy for awards presented to various dignitaries and constituents. Her calligraphy also appears all over downtown Ventura shops. At 19, she managed the bakery at the natural foods store, Hope and Hagen's, was assistant manager at the vegetarian deli in Ojai and was a baker at City Bakery in Ventura. Over the years, she designed, made and marketed beautiful fragrant eye rests and neck pillows, along with other unique gift items.

The past several months, she worked as assistant manager for her mother at the Humane Society Thrift Store in downtown Ventura. In addition, she operated her own E-Bay web site and recently one for the thrift store, all the time, being a good and loving wife to her husband, Jimmy. Michelle and her brother, Lance Talkington, were born in Ventura and lived their first few years in La Conchita.

Then they began their young lives in the mountains of Santa Cruz, moving back to Ventura when Michelle was in fifth grade. She attended Will Rogers and Blanche Reynolds elementary schools, then Cabrillo Middle School, Ventura High School and Ventura College. Perhaps she was taken from us so early because it is reward time for a job well done. She will long be remembered by a multitude of appreciative relatives, friends, acquaintances and others who have loved her over the years.
