Liana, 20 months old, was reported missing from Phoenix, Arizona on September 26, 2001 by her mother, Virginia Venegas and her mother's boyfriend, Juan Velazquez. Venegas said Velazquez had gone to do laundry and she had thought Liana was with him, but he returned without her. The next day, her story broke down under police interrogation and she admitted that Velazquez had beaten Liana to death and they had weighted her body down with a concrete block and tossed it into a canal. At the time Liana vanished, child protective services were investigating Velazquez and Venegas for allegedly abusing Liana and her three-year old sister Isabella. Isabella had bruises on her body and told one of her aunts that Velazquez had hit her. The social worker who interviewed Isabella, however, decided there was no proof that the girls were being abused. The Sandoval sisters' case files were closed the same day Liana's mother told police what really happened to her. Liana's sister, who was also brutally beaten, has gone to live with her father. She is still recovering from her injuries and from the psychological trauma she experienced when she witnessed Liana's death. All bio information and photo's are from the website Children Who Never Made It Home (http://www.free-webspace.biz/thevictims/ages.html).
