War of 1812 Veteran

-------------------

Philo Miles was born in Connecticut, but removed to Madison county when young. At age 20, I believe he enlisted in Elisha Farnham's 129th Regiment of the NY Militia to serve in the War of 1812. This regiment was raised in Cazenovia, Fenner, Nelson, and surrounding areas of Madison County, New York.

Philo met Abilena Hopkins in Eaton (Madison county), and were married August 10, 1815, in Eaton, NY. Their first home was in Scott, Cortland county, where they lived in a log house, built by Philo. Their three oldest children were born there.

They relocated to the town of Homer, eventually to Homer Gulf, where they lived in a log house until Philo built a frame house in 1848.

Philo owned and operated a saw mill in Homer Gulf. He also made charcoal for blacksmith shops, hauling the charcoal to Scott, Sempronius, and other places.

Philo and Abilena had 12 children - Lorena (married Andrew Crosby), Charles (married Amy Pettingale), Rebecca (married Carlos F. Hotchkiss), Marinda (married John C. Selover), Lucy (married Samuel Andrews), John (married Amy), Columbus (married Amanda Sherman), Joseph (served in the Civil War; married Margaret Peters), Philo (made his home in Eaton, NY; killed by falling from a load of hay, breaking his neck), Levi (served in the Civil War; married Alvira Peters Evans), Rachel (died at age 16), and Alanson (died at age 2).

There is record of 3 more children born after Alanson, all dying at birth or shortly after.
