MILES, JOSEPH – Age, 30 years. Enlisted at Cortland, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. D, December 2, 1861; wounded in action, August 28, 1862, near Gainesville, Va.; discharged for disability, November 1, 1862, at Point Lookout, Md.

CORTLAND EVENING STANDARD, TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 1894

HOMER DEPARTMENT
Mr. Joseph Miles died at his residence on North Fulton-st. in this village on Saturday at about 1 o'clock in the afternoon. Mr. Miles has been in poor health for several months, but he was feeling unusually well on Saturday. He had been out of doors most of the morning and at noon went into the house and after eating his dinner was about to leave the table when the end came. His heart which has been the cause of his feebleness, suddenly refused to act which resulted in death.
Mr. Miles has resided in this village, his native place, all of his life. Thirty-four years ago he was married to Miss Margaret Peters of Summerhill, who with their three children, Eugene, Herman and Edith, survives him. Besides his immediate family he leaves a brother and two sisters, Mr. Columbus Miles of Summerhill and Mrs. Lucy Andrews and Mrs. Miranda Selover, both of whom reside near this village. The deceased enlisted in the Seventy-sixth regiment, Company D, in 1861, and after serving one year was wounded in the battle of Gaine's Mill, Va., after which he was retired on account of disability.
His funeral was held in the G.A.R. hall this morning at 11 o'clock. The members of his company who reside in Cortland and the local G.A.R. Post attended in a body. The services were conducted by Rev. S. F. Sanford. Interment was made in Glenwood cemetery.
