Mineralogist J.W. Anthony
A memorial service will be held today for UA mineralogist John W. Anthony, author of "Mineralogy of Arizona" and curator of the university's mineral museum for 25 years. Anthony died of heart failure early Monday morning at an El Paso hospital. He was 71.
Anthony taught at the University of Arizona for 40 years and in 1967 earned the UA Outstanding Faculty Member Award. A registered Arizona mining engineer, he co-founded the Arizona Geological Society in the early 1950s. Anthony, a native of Brockton, Mass., moved to Tucson in the mid-1940s, where he received a bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona in 1946. He earned a master's from the UA in 1951 and a doctorate from Harvard University in 1965. "Mineralogy of Arizona" was published in 1977, and in 1986 Anthony retired as UA professor emeritus of geosciences. "It's a book geared for the interested amateur mineralogists out there, and it's had wide appeal to the public - I've seen copies all over this country, and even in Japan and Australia," UA geosciences Professor Spencer R. Titley said of "Mineralogy of Arizona." After retirement Anthony continued to work, with other researchers, on a five-volume series called "Handbook of Mineralogy." He was senior author of the first volume, published in 1990.
Anthony is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Y. Anthony of El Paso; his daughter, Doris Kathryn Bastiampillai of Bayville, N.Y.; two sons, John Anthony Jr. and Ryan Nicholas Anthony, both of Tucson; a sister, Elisabeth Dressler of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and his previous wife, Arline Bateman of Tucson.
Friends, former students and colleagues are invited to the memorial service at 3 p.m. in the Rincon Room (formerly the Junior Ballroom) of the UA Student Union.
