"J.P. Akers, Jr., 86, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., passed away at Sierra Vista Regional Health Care Center on Friday, March 7, 2008.
J. P. was born on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 1921, in Craymor, Ky., to the late Jake Akers, Sr and the late Gertrude Osborne Akers. He was raised and educated in Douglas, Ariz. He received his bachelor of science degree in 1951 and his master's in 1960 in geology from the University of Arizona. J.P. worked on various ground water project throughout the state of Arizona and was instrumental in drilling 500 to 600 wells. From 1957 to 1963, he was the chief of the Navajo well-development program which was responsible for drilling 300 water wells. Later, J.P. worked in the Caribbean, Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and California planning and establishing procedures for studies of ground water, surface water and quality of water. He was the senior team leader for USGS and received many awards.
He proudly served with the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II. During his distinguished career he received many awards, some of which were the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.
J.P. married Mary Kimble DeLugas on Feb. 7, 1942, in Douglas. He was an active member of First Assembly of God Church, the Gideon, the American Institute of Hydrology and was a registered Geologist in California and Arizona.
J.P .is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary; and his son, Gary P. Akers, both of Sierra Vista.
He was the proud grandfather to Shannon and Jennifer Golden. Other survivors include his son-in-law, Robert; sisters, Edna Wicke of Bisbee and Ethel Bricker of Dallas, Texas; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Bea Akers; and his daughter, Susan Golden, who passed in 2006.
Funeral services will be held at the First Assembly of God Church with Pastor Robert Drake officiating on Thursday, March 13, 2008, at 11:30 a.m. with interment following at 1 p.m. in the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery. No visitation or viewing is being planned. If friends wish they may make memorial contribution in his honor to the Gideons International or the Missions fund of 1st Assembly of God Church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hatfield Funeral Home."
