The Artist:
A native of Chicago, Illinois, Nora Colburn studied art in High School and won a partial scholarship to the Chicago Art Institute for her dynamic advertising illustrations for the Chicago Fire Department. As she continued to explore her love of art, Nora's tremendous talent developed through the demanding mediums of oil painting and watercolor. Her portfolio shows that in 1969 she produced several hand-painted Christmas cards. Nora's scientific artwork (largely pen and ink drawings) includes technical illustrations for reports and texts for agencies like the Nuclear Regulatory Agency plus field trip guidebooks for the Arizona Geological Society. She has also drafted geological maps for publications and theses by University of Arizona graduate students.

With great versatility in subject, medium, and style, Nora Colburn's artwork is distinguished by vibrant colors and interesting composition. With equal enthusiasm, she enjoys life drawing and landscapes. As a multi-faceted artist and earth scientist, she continued developing her skills locally by attending art classes at Pima Community College as well as open drawing studio sessions taught by Murray Keshner at the Jewish Community Center.

The Geologist:
Nora received her Bachelor of Arts degree in geology from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1966. Moving to Tucson in 1967, she undertook graduate classes in Earth and Planetary Geology at the University of Arizona. Her career has ranged from working as a geologist, drafter, and scientific illustrator, to functioning as a teaching and research assistant at the University of Arizona. While living primarily in Arizona and New Mexico, she has also worked in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Texas, California, and Nevada. Her assignments have included: exploring for gold, uranium, and base metals, regional reconnaissance, and data compilation for Noranda Exploration, Perry Exploration, Cyprus Mines, Tenneco Oil, and Cerro Corporations; supervising drilling programs, logging diamond drill core, compiling geologic data, and writing summary project reports; helping develop surface and underground mines at the Bruce Mine near Bagdad, Arizona and Johnson Camp in the Little Dragoon Mountains in southeast Arizona. Nora is a member and past Treasurer of the Arizona Geological Society and has served as a National Delegate for the Association of Women Geoscientists.
