Born on St. Patrick's Day in 1853 to Ransom and Mary Waggoner. He had 13 brothers and sisters, including boy-girl twins. His father freed his slaves before the Civil War. The War took a terrible toll on the family, however, with the loss of Joseph and Middleton on July 3, 1863 at Vicksburg, a day before the fall. And perhaps another son too.
Married Martha Melissa Pearson on January 9, 1878. To them were born 6 children; Phines Waggoner, John Oscar Waggoner, Thomas Pearson Waggoner,
Daisy Waggoner Gregory, Roxie Waggoner Cunningham, Joseph Ransom Waggoner. He died at the age of 37. His wife would later move to Texas with her children. She is buried at the Era Cemetery, Cooke County, Texas.
