Emile Joseph "Art" Charland, 80, of Niantic formerly of West Hartford, died Wednesday morning (December 5, 2001) at Mariner at Bridebrook in Niantic after a long illness.

He was born May 29, 1921 in Hartford, the son of the late Emile and Annabel Charland. Mr. Charland married Mary Rita Sheehan on October 25,1952, they resided in West Hartford, communicants of the Church of St. Brigid until Mary's death in 1977. Mr. Charland, a U.S. Airforce Veteran of World War II in the 78th Fighter Control Squadron, was honorably discharged as a Sgt. in 1945.

He worked at Dunham-Bush as an engineer until his retirement. He had been a member of the U.S. Naval Institute for 35 years, and instructor in the U.S. Power Squadron, and an avid supporter of conservation and animal protection societies such as the Humane Society and the Audubon and Wildlife societies.

Mr. Charland is survived by a sister, Jane Corrigan; and a brother, John
Charland, both of Niantic. He is also survived by several devoted nieces and
nephews, Alice Brekke, Cecilia Boys, Jane Nebelung, Christopher Charland, John
Peter Charland, and Julie Ribchinsky.
