John Herring’s parents, Oliver Boone and Georgea M. Gamble were second cousins, descended through their common great grandparents, Shelton and Mildred Clark White. He never married, but following his father’s death in 1902, he took responsibility for the care of his mother, Georgea. At first he worked in a dry goods store owned by his brother-in-law, Lester Black. Later he worked in a bank, and on the final census where he was alive, he was a farmer (1930 census for DeWitt, Arkansas). Some kind of illness must have overtaken him, because he died at Rochester, Minnesota, most probably while seeking treatment for his condition. He was buried beside his mother in the DeWitt Cemetery.
