Benny came to live with us on October 12, 2002. The vet said he was about a year old at the time, so we chose that as his birthday.
He was a stray, and showed up on the doorstep of a friend. She couldn't keep him, so he moved in with us, and became a part of our family immediately.
He was intelligent, loving, and loyal. He sat with us every night to watch TV, and never failed to greet us when we would come home. He gave us unlimited cheek rubs, head bumps, and purred when his ears were rubbed.
He had a large vocabulary, and had many cat words to express his opinions. He loved to tell us about his day. Occasionally, we would hold two cans of cat food for him, and he would choose his dinner by rubbing his cheek on one of the cans. He loved people food, and would reach up, and tug at your arm at the dinner table for a treat. Every time there was a household project, our helper would be there, in the middle of the action. When the doorbell would ring, instead of hiding like most cats, he would run to the door to see who was there, and greet them. He loved people, and was truly his own little person.
A tumor appeared on his left cheek a couple of months before his death. It grew, and was inoperable. It kept him from eating, and increasingly caused his breathing to rattle. Although we fed him liquids with a syringe, he eventually went from twelve pounds to five pounds. His voice faded to a tiny squeak. On his last day, he could no longer stand. John, the doctor, came to our home, and he went peacefully, lying on our laps, at five minutes before noon, on a beautiful Southern California morning.
