He enlisted in the Confederate service at Kingston, Tennessee on November 12th, 1862. He fought with Walker's Cavalry Battalion, and was wounded at Chickamauga. After his recovery, he served under Capt. John Blythe, Confederate Army Co.B 5th Tennessee Calvary.
James was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond in 1865 for sickness. He recovered and survived the war.
He married Susanah Harderson on March 1st, 1874 in Newton County, Arkansas. They had ten children, C C Edgmon being one of them.
James died on May 10th, 1930.
