The family resided at 3 Concord Street, Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland at the time of John's enlistment and death.

John was brother to: Isabella, Edward, James, Alexander, Elizabeth and Margaret.

Prior to enlisting John was employed as a Plate Layer. He enlisted under War Office Letter at Old Town Hall, Belfast on 8 May 1915. He actually was tested in his skilled trade by Mr. William McLean at 76 Grosvenor Road, Belfast to determine the degree of skill he had. The records indicate a "Very Good Plate Layer". John was assigned as a Pte. to the 150th Royal Engineers Ulster Division and shipped to France on 5 October 1915.

At the time of enlistment he is described to be 5'6" tall, 143lbs, 37" chest +2" on expansion and in 'fair' health but still certified for war duty.

John was promoted to Lance Corporal 10 February 1916. He was wounded in battle 26 May 1916 and returned to his unit April 6 1916.

He was listed as missing on the first day of the Battle of the Somme - July 1 1916 one of more than 60,000 casualties that day.
