Served in the U.S. Army and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He also served as an Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.

Gary was the eldest of six children. On September 14, 1930, he was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church in Wilkes-Barre by Rev. J. S. Savacool. He was married and raised two sons. Between 1963 and 1991 he was employed by GM Delco Remy Battery in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey, as a maintenance laborer.
