Senior Master Sergeant Mercer was an AC-130C Defensive Aerial Gunner assigned to the 16th Special Operations Squadron, 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, 7th Air Force, U.S. Air Force deployed to Ubon Air Base, Thailand. On 18 June 1972, he was a crew member of a AC-130C Spectre Gunship II attack aircraft on a mission near the A Shau Valley, South Vietnam. During the mission the aircraft was hit by a surface to air missile and crashed near the border of Laos. His remains were recovered on 5 October 1993 and identified on 12 October 1994. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial (Find a Grave Memorial 158698316); also see Arlington National Cemetery (Find a Grave Memorial 15155824). He is honored on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington DC; VVM Wall, Panel 01w, Line 45.
