Staff Sergeant Dennis Dyer 1947-1968
Dennis Earl Dyer was born February 1, 1947 in Oakland, California. He and his family moved to Taft, California in 1951. Dennis went through local schools and graduated from Taft Union High School in 1964. While at TUHS he was a member of the high school's band and was an outstanding swimmer setting several records. He attended Taft College and graduated with an industrial arts major in 1966. Following graduation from Taft College Dennis was employed with Texaco Oil Company for one year before entering in U.S. Army on June 22, 1967.
Dyer sailed for Vietnam on November 22, 1967, and was assigned to A Company, 3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry, 3rd Platoon, 9th Infantry Division. Troops of the 9th Infantry Division, nicknamed "The OLD RELIABLES," have scored many major triumphs since launching combat operations in Vietnam. The most significant achievements include numerous victories over Main Force Viet Cong and North Vietnamese units from the Demilitarized Zone to the Mekong Delta, formation of a Mobile Riverine Force, suppression of the VC terror campaign during Tet, 1968, and of a follow up attempt to invade Saigon in May.
On February 1, 1968, SGT Dyer was awarded the Silver Star -- the military's third highest honor -- for gallantry in action for rescuing 28 men and two dead under fire. He was later promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant E6.
SSGT Dennis Dyer was killed in action when the squadron of 11 infantrymen he was leading were overrun and killed by the enemy in Log An, Republic of South Vietnam.
SSGT Dyer was buried with full military honors in the West Side District Cemetery, Taft, California. The Reverend of the First Baptist Church along with military personnel officiated his services. SSGT Dyer is survived by his wife, his parents, his brother, his paternal grandparents, and his maternal grandfather. In lieu of flowers the family requested that contribution be made to the Dennis Dyer Memorial Scholarship Fund at Taft College.
Along with the Silver Star for gallantry SGGT Dyer was also awarded by the Army the Purple Heart, Infantry Badge, and the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon.
