Vito Lacirignola was born in Fasano, Puglia, Italy to Angela Lommartino and Alfonso Lacirignola. He studied for the priesthood and when he arrived at Ellis Island in 1907, his occupation was listed as a priest. However, he never took his final vows and in 1911 he married Amalia Cocco who was born in Ururi, Campobasso, Italy. He met her through the St. Raphael Society for Italian immigrants, an organization that arranged marriages for Italian immigrant men and Italian women. They had three children: Alfonso, who died at three weeks; Joey (who changed his family name to Laciano)and married Margaret Miller; and Angela who married William "Buddy" Beyer. His grandchildren were Jo-Ann, Richie and Jimmy Laciano and Eddie, Carole and Susan Beyer. He worked as a toy maker for Gund and then for the Ace Toy Company in New York City.
