Sarah's father Elias, was in Thomas Nash's company of Coast Guards during the Revolutionary War. He was first married to Olive Gray (1748-July 1778), and had 4 children, Six months after her death, he married Susannah Green in January 1779. Sarah was the first born of seven more children.

In 1840, she was living with a male 20-29 years old (almost certainly son Joseph, who was not married) and son Henry. In 1850, she was living with son Elias and his wife and children, and was probably living with them at her death in 1858.
