Branigan was born in Mount Kisco, New York and grew up in Armonk in Westchester County. A vocalist with a five-and-a-half octave range, she was a touring backup singer for Leonard Cohen before launching her solo career in the late 1970s. She also made occasional appearances in films and television and, in 2002 received excellent reviews for playing Janis Joplin in the off-Broadway musical "Love, Janis."
