Melvin P. Merritts Jr., 75, died at Van Zandt VA Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Roaring Spring, son of Melvin P. and Clara B. Adams Merritts Sr. He married Betty I. Harr. Surviving are a son, Melvin L.; a daughter, Melissa L. Spade; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his wife, who died July 19, 1996; his parents; a son, Mark Allen; and a sister, Delores M. Rinier. Melvin retired from Warnaco Sportswear as a packer with 34 years of service. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he was captured and held prisoner for 28 months. He was a member of VFW 7043 of Blain City, Pa. He enjoyed his rose garden and visiting his grandchildren.
