Enlisted in the Army Dec. 27, 1933 at age 19. He was reported missing since July 20, 1950. Finally April 1952 the Office of the Adjucate General declared him as "Killed in Action" on that day.
He was survived by his mother, three sisters and brothers: Mrs. Mary Miller of Roaring Spring, Mrs. Edna Shaw of East Freedom, Mrs. Nell Halloran of Lowell, Mass., Mrs. Florence Sharpless of Sandy Ridge, Mrs. Edith Ferguson and Mrs. Aletta Hartman of Altoona, Mrs. Alma Rightnour of Claysburg, Fred and Raymond Crawford of Juniata and David of Duncansville.
History: Served in Panama Canal zone for three years, Governor's Island, NY for three years, a year at Carlisle barracks, and then to the Phillipines a year before the war was declared.
He became a Japanese prisoner of war captured April, 1942 when the Philippines were taken. He was held there as farm labor and a machine shop welder for twenty-six months. In June 1944, he was transferred to Osaka, Japan to do more war work. Requested to go back to Phillipines and remained to be among the last to be taken when the islands were surrendered to the enemy. He was released from Korea at the close of the war.
In 1948 Sgt. Crawford reenlisted.
In early 1950 Mrs. Mae Crawford joined Sgt. Jesse M. Crawford in Japan but left for home (here at Mountain Lake) when he was ordered to active duty in Korea. He was reported missing July 20, 1950 at age 36 in Korea.
