I had the unfortunate responsibility of notifying LCpl McBride's mother that he was KIA. When I first arrived at her home, no one answered the door. A neighbor told me that she was still at work and to return later. When I did, a young woman answered the door and was shocked to see a Marine Major and a minister were asking for Mrs. McBride. It turned out that she was Donald's sister-in-law and her husband was a Marine recovering from wounds Okinawa. She obviously thought that I was there with with bad news about her husband. When Donald's mother came to the door, she took the news as gratiously as was possible. All casualty notification calls are difficult, but the McBride family made my job easier. They sacrificed one son and almost lost another. I think of that day frequently. Anthony P. Mustapich Major, USMC
