Actor. He shall be remembered as the long-suffering Jack Duckworth of ITV's "Coronation Street". Born William Cleworth Piddington, he was raised in Bradford and worked in the building trade before deciding, despite a lack of formal training, to persue his show business ambitions. Tarmey continued his construction jobs while taking gigs as a nightclub singer and working in theater and television in a succession of increasingly important small parts. Seen a few times on "Cornation Street" as an extra, usually a dart player at the Rovers Return, he first appeared as Jack in 1979 and took over the role full time in 1983. Jack and Vera, played by Elizabeth Dawn, remained an important and popular part of the show until Vera's 2008 'death', an event necessitated by Miss Dawn's retirement due to ill health. A heavy smoker long afflicted with cardiovascular disease, he left "Coronation Street" in November of 2010 at around the time he published an autobiography entitled "Jack Duckworth and Me: My Life on the Street and Other Adventures" and settled in Ashton-under-Lyne. During his time on television Tarmey kept up his music career singing at jazz clubs and cutting a number of records; he died while on vacation in Tenerife, Spain.
