MY BELOVED SON CARL

CARL was born to BEVERLY (Ables) ADKINS, and JAMES T. ADKINS, SR., in the early morning hours of 03/14/1960. Doctors realized immediately that he had a major medical problem. Upon being fed formula he forcefully vomitted. Chest X-rays confirmed that his stomach was pushed up into his chest and upside down.

CARL was transported approx. 115 miles to the Crippled Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. He had surgery a day later for a diaphragmic hernia. It was the surgeons' opinion that CARL'S stomach had been pushed up into his chest due to extreme pressure before or during birth. He weighed 11 lbs. at birth and was 22" long.
==============================

Eventually, at about 19 years of age, CARL was diagnosed with the MARFAN SYNDROME, a heritable disorder of the connective tissue that affects many organ systems. The most serious problems associated with the MARFAN SYNDROME involve the cardiovascular system. If the aorta becomes greatly widened or torn, surgical repair is necessary.
==============================

NOTE: During this period of time, prior to CARL being diagnosed with MARFAN SYNDROME, his father died suddenly while on a business trip to Alaska. He was 47 years old and had no known heart problems or other health issues. An autopsy was performed, and the cause of death was found to be a total dissection of his entire aorta.
==============================

CARL was 14 yrs. old when his father died, and he was 35 yrs. old when he was operated on for the first time. The surgery took place at Stanford University Hospital in Palo Alto, California, for a dissecting aneurysm of the ascending aorta (arch area above the heart). He tolerated the surgery well and was released five days later being advised he needed to return for followup exams and tests in preparation for surgery on his descending aorta. Although I continued trying to persuade him to go back to the Stanford doctors, CARL didn't return to them for rechecks but remained under the care of his primary care physician.
==============================

During the first week of January 2002, CARL was admitted to a hospital in Eugene, Oregon. Surgeons operated on his descending aorta, which was dissecting all the way down the trunk of his body. The surgery took many hours and did not go well. There were major complications, and I knew in my heart that the prognosis did not look good. My mind just seemed to go blank and, even though I was comprehending some of what the surgeons saying, I was in shock. At some point in time during the night or early morning hours, the nurses were turning Carl, repositioning his seven-foot long body in the bed, and his surgery site began to bleed. By the next morning the surgeons appeared, and CARL was taken back into surgery. There was major bleeding of his aorta, and he was in surgery again into the evening hours. After surgery, CARL was taken back to his room, but by the next morning he had gone into a coma with his major organs beginning to shut down.

Finally, saying there was nothing more that they could do, the surgeons called in a "special team," the people you never want to see, or talk to. They have nothing to say that you are "ready" or "prepared" to hear. It seemed entirely sureal; the conversation we were having about disconnecting my "baby" from the ventilator tube that was keeping him "alive."

My beloved son died peacefully, within only a few moments after the nurse removed the breathing tube. It was 3:42 p.m., January 18, 2002.

==============================
CAUSE OF DEATH: Acute Dissection of Entire Aorta, 10 days; due to Marfan Syndrome, Lifetime; Secondary Renal Failure (from dissection), 10 days. Age: 41 yrs, 10 mos.
==============================

CARL was preceded in death by his father, JAMES ADKINS, SR. in 1974; his brother, KENNETH EUGENE ADKINS, in 1981; his grandparents, LEOLA and WALTER ABLES in 1979; and his stepfather, WILEY SIMMONS, who had been like a real father to CARL for twenty-two years before dying in 1998.

CARL was survived by his loving wife of six weeks, KAREN; his stepsons, Douglas, Matthew and Steven; his mother and stepfather, BEVERLY and ROBERT FLOWERDAY; half-brother, JAMES ADKINS, JR., half-sisters, GLORIA MORRELL and CATHY FATUROS; nieces, MICHELLE and GEORGIA MORRELL; and nephew JOHN MORRELL, III, who died six weeks after CARL of a dissection of his aorta due to Marfan Syndrome. I have sponsored JOHNNY'S memorial page so please, if you can spare the time, leave flowers for him. He was only 19 years old when he died.

I miss my sons very much. Words can't begin to convey the sorrow I feel in my heart of not having them in my life. I think of them every single day and look forward to the day when I will be reunited with them and my other loved ones in heaven.
