Agnes Mahoney, the daughter of Ellen Fogarty and John Mahoney (Irish immigrant from County Wicklow), was born in Pottsville, PA in 1887. The Mahoney family moved to Philadelphia shortly after her birth, as her sister, Marcella was born in Philadelphia the following year. In September 1910, Agnes married Vincent Hines at St. Francis Xavier Church in Philadelphia(by her uncle Rev.Patrick Fogarty). Vincent DePaul Hines was born on Boon Street in Manayunk in 1888. Both his parents Irish immigrants and devoted Catholics, *Mary Shields and *Frank Hines, died before he was 20. In 1910 Vincent and his brother, James, were living with their sister, Mary Hines McMenamin and her family. He was working as a mailer for a newspaper. Vincent worked for the Philadelphia Bulletin and the Philadelphia Record. Mailers would take the newspapers off the presses and sort them. They would stuff the newspapers by hand with any special inserts such as advertisements. Then they bundled the newspapers and sent them to the loading docks where they were placed on trucks for delivery. When Vincent Hines succumbed to a heart attack(collapsed on July 12 on the job) on July 15,1945 he died in Hahnemann Hospital at Broad and Vine Street, at thie time three of his sons were serving in the Armed Forces during World War II. They were Vincent(Army), Joseph(Air Corp) and Francis(Army).Picture:Agnes Mahony Hines standing on the boardwalk at Atlantic City or Wildwood N.J.in the 1950s.
