Although it must have been very sad for the Carpenters to watch their little baby in this condition, they visited him often at the hospital. At the age of 15 months, little Joey died at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
At that time, his mother, Eileen, was told that she would never have any more children. However, nine years later, much to everyone's surprise and delight, Eileen gave birth to Vincent Jude. And then just 19 months after that William John was born.
Probably owing to the devastation caused by his death, little Joey's death certificate and cemetery record had him listed as William J. Carpenter. This went unnoticed for over 60 years. When Joey's youngest brother, Bill Carpenter began his family history quest, he discovered the error. It took him many months to finally have the records changed to reflect the proper name of Joseph Francis Carpenter, Jr.
