William was born in the Fairmount or now known as the Art Museum section of Philadelphia at 2108 Fairmout ave.7-30-1864.His parents were William H.Carpenter and Mary Pembroke(born in Kilkenny,Ireland).
On October 26, 1890, William John Carpenter, son of William Henry Carpenter and Mary Pembroke, married Ellen Brady at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia. Not much is known about the family of Ellen Elizabeth Brady. She was born in New Philadelphia, Blythe Township, Schuylkill County, PA around 1865. Her parents were Irish immigrants named Thomas Brady and Julia Martin. No record of them appears after 1870. Sometime before 1890, Ellen moved to Philadelphia. For most of William John Carpenter's life, he works as a "Box Maker". In 1930 he was a night watchman in an office building in center city Philadelphia. In 1890, William was living at 2121 Wallace Street. Later, he and Ellen lived at times on Buttonwood, Bucknell, Cambridge and 28th Streets. Each of the six children of Ellen Brady and William J. Carpenter were baptized at the St. Francis Xavier R.C.Church in Philadelphia.
