Mr. Jarvis grew up in Clarksburg, West Virginia and graduated from Washington Irving High School in 1967. He attended Lehigh University, and in 1971 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He attended law school at Vanderbilt University, graduating in 1975.

He spent more than 30 years practicing law in Clarksburg with the firm of McNeer, Highland, McMunn & Varner. His areas of legal practice included banking law, business and commercial law and transactions, construction law, corporate law, labor and employment law, mergers and acquisitions, natural resources and energy law, real estate (commercial and residential), taxation, wills, trusts, and estates.

Since 2002 he served as President of Clarksburg Publishing Company, where he previously served as Vice President.

He was listed in Who's Who in American Law, and he was a member of the Pittsburgh Panel of Arbitrators, the American Arbitration Association, the West Virginia State Bar and the Harrison County Bar Association, where he served as president in 1993. He also devoted time to numerous boards and committees during his career.

Mr. Jarvis was an active athlete and outdoorsman. He completed four Ironman Triathlons. He finished his second Boston Marathon in the month preceding his death, and he was working toward his goal of running one marathon in every state. He regularly hunted and fished with his father, his brother and his son, making multiple trips to Alaska. He also enjoyed skiing and snowboarding with his children.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, a son, two grandchildren, a sister, a niece and two nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, James M. Jarvis and Maud Lee Jarvis, and a brother, James D Jarvis.
