LaVerne Smalley, age 87, of Neodesha, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at Wilson Medical Center in Neodesha. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 20, 2012 at the Loran Fawcett Chapel in Neodesha, with burial following at Neodesha Cemetery. LaVerne was born May 7, 1925 in Neodesha, Kansas the daughter of David and Edith (Plotner) Mahaffey. She attended various rural schools and graduated from Moorhead High School. On March 12, 1943 in Neodesha, KS she married Lloyd F. Smalley, he preceded her in death. LaVerne will be remembered for her love of children. She volunteered as a teacher's aide for 10 years in the Neodesha Public Schools. She also made ceramic Easter eggs from 1985 - 2011 for the school children and the Boy & Girl Scout Troops so they could decorate them. She had been a Girl Scout leader for 30 years and was extremely family oriented. LaVerne had been a member of First Christian Church of Neodesha. She is survived by two daughters; Carolyn Smalley of Neodesha, KS and Darinda and husband Thomas Kane of Neodesha, three granddaughters; Dixie and husband Ivory Kelly of Parsons, KS, Dalinda Taylor and Lisa Taylor, both of Neodesha. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren; Shailea Taylor, Neamiah Taylor, Ezekiel Kelly, Kallisa Kelly, Xavier and Zander Taylor. LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters; Stella Withrow and Beverly Blake and a great-granddaughter Keira Kelly.
