Robert was "Killed In Action" by multiple fragmentation wounds received in Pleiku Province, South Vietnam.
He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.

Wilmington soldier dies in Vietnam
PFC. Robert D. Alexander, 25, of 301 W. 39th St. was killed in Vietnam Saturday by enemy mortar fire.
Alexander, a native of Wilmington, was the husband of the former Carolyn Sweeney of Wilmington, a stenographer for Atlas Chemical Industries, Inc. Alexander attended Salesianum school.
Mrs. Sweeney said her husband was drafted into the Army last Dec. 1 and sent to Fort Jackson, S.C., for training. While there, he completed an 11-week leader course and became an "expert" rifleman.
He was sent to Vietnam in late February, arriving there March 1. While there, he was assigned to Company A in the 4th Infantry Division. His wife had received two letters from him this week.
He is the 24th Delaware soldier to die in the war.
Before Alexander went into the Army, the couple lived in the Club Avenue Apartments in Claymont. He owned and operated Bob's Auto Body shop at 505 W. Front St. Mrs. Alexander has been living with her mother, Mrs. Margaret Donahoe, at the West 39th Street address.
In addition to his widow, Pfc. Alexander is survived by his mother, Mrs. Catherine Alexander of Wilmington, and a sister, Mrs. Henrietta Nepi of Sharpley.
