Gerald, the son of Donald K. Bagaason and Viola J. Bagaason , the brother of Donald, Linda, Sandra, Patricia and Mark all of Clearbrook MN entered service (Selective Service) in the US Marine Corps on February 24, 1966 in Fargo ND. In Vietnam, he was assigned to and serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On September 9, two Marines from Company M were killed in action on two separate occasions. At approximately 1655 Hours a patrol in the vicinity of the Kai Tai (2) hamlet in the Hoa Van District of Quang Nam Province was hit with a volley of enemy rifle fire and one round of an M-79 rifle grenade wounding three Marines with one of them subsequently dying of his wounds.

Shortly after dark, an ambush was getting into their position south of the hamlet of Man Quan (1) also in the Hoa Van District when the Marines were hit with some small arms fire. Having been detected by the enemy the men were shifting their position when three enemy mortar rounds impacted in their midst. The enemy small arms and mortar fire killed one Marine and wounded two.

One of the casualties was PFC Bagaason who was killed as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds.
