Painter, Sculptor, Graphic Artist. He studied in Leipzig at the Academy of Visual Arts. Between 1953 and 1974 he taught there and became member of the Academy of Arts of the GDR in 1978. He marched in the so-called "Montagsdemonstrationen" (Monday demonstrations) in Leipzig in 1989 that initiated the fall of the Government of the GDR. His sculpture "Mann mit Maske" ("Man with Mask") was placed at his grave in April 2005.
