Bernice Skidmore Whitmire, of East Ridge, entered into her eternal home Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009.

She was born March 15, 1912. Mrs. Whitmire was a native of Loudon County, Tenn., but had lived in Chattanooga for over 80 years. Her husband, Charlie C. Whitmire, three sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.

Bernice was a charter member of Asebi Court #36, Ladies Oriental Shrine which was organized in 1946; a charter member of Tennessee Court #1 Order of the Amaranth of Tennessee where she served as Royal Matron; a charter member of World War I Veterans, constituted in 1961; past Worthy Matron, Order of the Eastern Star, Dorcas Chapter 228 and a member of East Lake Chapter 238 where she received her 50 year pin several years ago. Bernice was also a member of the Alhambra Widows Club.

Mrs. Whitmire was well known for her philanthropic work in each organization which she was privileged to be a member. She worked very hard for the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children until her health began to fail, and participated in many yard sales and flea markets to raise money for the various groups. She will be missed for all of her good deeds. Bernice was a caring person, a care giver for her family and anyone she could help in any way possible. She enjoyed helping people and called it "putting legs on your prayers." Bernice was also a regular contributor to St. Jude Hospital and the Community Kitchen.

Bernice was responsible for helping start the "Forgotten Child Fund" by giving the first donation, started in Temple Bible Class, Highland Park Baptist Church where she was a member for more than 50 years. While a member there, she received a Scofield Bible for bringing 31 visitors to church one Sunday. In 1999, she became a member of East Ridge Baptist Church and the "Go Getters Sunday School Class."
