A Boston merchant, he was lost in the burning and sinking of the steamship Lexington on Long Island Sound the night of January 13, 1840. The Lexington, commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt, carried passengers between New York City and Stonington, Connecticut. It is believed the fire aboard was caused by a spark from the smokestack that ignited the stack's casing and then spread to cotton bales on the freight deck. Of the 143 people aboard, only four survived the disaster.
