Obituary – Mrs. Mary Wells Barton, widow of William Barton, died yesterday afternoon at her residence, No. 2,224 Fifth avenue. Mrs. Barton was seventy-six years of age. She had been gradually failing for some time, particularly since the death of her husband last July. Her illness finally terminated in pneumonia. Mrs. Barton was a native of Springfield, Mass., being a sister of James Wells of that city and David A. Wells of Norwich, Conn., the noted writer and lecturer on political economy. After her marriage to Mr. Barton she removed to this city, and she had resided here ever since. She died in the house where she had lived throughout her residence in Troy. Mrs. Barton was a prominent member of the Unitarian church. She was a woman of education, refinement and literary attainment. Coming from a literary family she always took great interest in literary matters and was remarkably well read. Mrs. Barton had no children, and her only surviving relatives are her brothers.
